That world inverted

2007 ¦ 14 mins ¦ Orchestra [2fl, 2ob, 2cl, 2bsn, 2hn, 2trp, trb, pno, 2perc, str]
Commissioned by the Edinburgh University Chamber Orchestra
1st performance by EUCO and William Conway (conductor) ¦ Reid Concert Hall, Edinburgh ¦ March 2008
Score (extract) [pdf]

"That world inverted" is about reflection; an oboe melody is reflected – refracted - by the pool of strings as light is mirrored in lapping water. Midway, the reflection is inverted; strings provide the impulse, mimicked by the rest of the orchestra - the sky echoing the sea.

"That world inverted" was commissioned by the Edinburgh University Chamber Orchestra to mark the occasion of their twenty-fifth anniversary. Fittingly, the composer also marked his own twenty-fifth anniversary in the week of the performance.
