moving from left to left

2005 ¦ 8 mins ¦ Violin, cello, piano
1st performance by Claire Yim (violin), Frances Boyson (piano) and the composer (cello)

Score (extract) [pdf]

A successful ensemble performance requires constant communication between members of the group. In a large orchestra, the conductor, as arbiter, makes obvious gestures to map the unfolding music. In a chamber group, the communication can manifest itself the smallest physical tics or the shaping of a musical phrase.

These dialogues are placed at the centre of “Moving from left to left”; the musical material is often flexible, being subject to the rules of a secret game the performers are playing. Whilst pitch-material remains unchanged, tempo and dynamic level are altered by each individual player in response to what the others are doing.
